【課文】

My daughter, Jane, never dreamed of receiving a letter from a girl of her own age in Holland. Last year, we were travelling across the Channel and Jane put a piece of paper with her name and address on it into a bottle. She threw the bottle into the sea. She never thought of it again, but ten months later, she received a letter from a girl in Holland. Both girls write to each other regularly now. However, they have decided to use the post office. Letters will cost a little more, but they will certainly travel faster.

1 dream [動(dòng)詞]夢(mèng)見，夢(mèng)想

一般用法為dream + that 從句，或dream of doing sth.

其過去式和過去分詞均有兩種，dreamed或dreamt。

I never dream of buying a house in Hangzhou.

我從沒想過在杭州買套房子。

2 we were travelling across the Channel.

這里的the Channel 特指英吉利海峽。

3 throw [動(dòng)詞]投，擲，拋出

throw的過去式為threw，過去分詞為thrown。

throw sth. into sth. 把某物扔進(jìn)某處

throw sth. to sb. 把某物扔向某人，其目的在于“傳遞”，介詞to表示行為方向，動(dòng)機(jī)是善意的。

throw sth. at sb. 把某物打向某人，其目的在于“打”，介詞at表示動(dòng)作在于企圖攻擊的目標(biāo)，動(dòng)機(jī)是惡意的。

如果think和of之間加入不同的詞，整體意思也會(huì)有一些區(qū)別，如：

think nothing of 不把……放在心里，輕視 think well of 高度評(píng)價(jià) think highly of 對(duì)……高度評(píng)價(jià)，尊重

5 receive sth. from sb. 從某人那里收到某物

I received a bar of chocolate from my sister.

6 decide [動(dòng)詞]決定，判斷

decide to do sth.

表示決定的詞還有determine，resolve等，它們之間的細(xì)微區(qū)別如下：

decide 側(cè)重指經(jīng)過思考、比較、討論或詢問之后做出的決定

determine 指經(jīng)過深思熟慮之后決心做某事并堅(jiān)持下去。

resolve 語氣很強(qiáng)，強(qiáng)調(diào)堅(jiān)定不移的信念，暗含遠(yuǎn)大抱負(fù)和堅(jiān)強(qiáng)決心。

He decided to study abroad after one-month consideration.

在考慮了一個(gè)月后，他決定去國外留學(xué)。
