TV shows and long bus trips
Long bus rides are like television shows. They have a beginning, a middle, and an end ? with commercials thrown in every three or four minutes. The commercials are unavoidable. They happen whether you want them or not. Every couple of minutes a billboard glides by outside the bus window. “Buy Super Clean Toothpaste.” “Drink Good’n wet root beer.” “Fill up with Pacific Gas.” Only if you sleep, which is equal to turning the television set off, are you spared the unending cry of “You Need it! Buy It now!”
The beginning of the ride is comfortable and somewhat exciting, even if you’ve traveled that way before. Usually some things have changed ? new houses, new buildings, sometimes even a new road. The bus driver is particularly reckless or daring, the ride can be as thrilling as a suspense story. Will the driver pass the truck in time? Will the driver move into the right or the left-hand lane? After a while, of course. The excitement die down. Sleeping for a while helps pass the middle hours of the ride. Food always makes bus rides more interesting. But you’ve got to be careful of what kind of food you eat. Too much salty food can make you very thirsty between stops.
The end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning. You know it will soon be over and there’s a kind of expectation and excitement in that. The seat, of course, has become harder as the hours have passed. By now you’ve sat with your legs crossed, with your hands in your lap, with your hands on the arm rests ? even with your hands crossed your head. The end comes just at the right time. There are just no more ways to sit.

(觀點句)Long bus rides are like(像, 喜歡) television shows. They have a beginning(開始),a middle(中間部分,中間的),and an end(結(jié)束)?with commercials(商業(yè)廣告)thrown(扔,投,拋)in every(每一的, 每隔的) three or four minutes(分鐘).The commercials are unavoidable(不可避免的).They(指代commercials) happen(發(fā)生) whether you want them or not(無論…還是).Every couple of(幾個的) minutes a billboard(廣告牌) glides by(滑過) outside(在...的外面) the bus window(窗戶).“Buy(購買) Super(特級的,特大的,極好的) Clean(清潔的, 干凈的, 打掃) Toothpaste(牙膏).”“Drink Good’n wet root(格威特露) beer(啤酒).” “Fill up with (用...充滿)Pacific Gas(太平洋汽油).” Only if you sleep, which is equal to turning the television set off, are you spared the unending cry of “You Need it! Buy It now!”
Long bus rides are like television shows. They have a beginning, a middle, and an end ? with commercials thrown in every three or four minutes. The commercials are unavoidable. They happen whether you want them or not. Every couple of minutes a billboard glides by outside the bus window. “Buy Super Clean Toothpaste.” “Drink Good’n wet root beer.” “Fill up with Pacific Gas.” Only if(只有在...的情況下) you sleep(睡覺), which is equal to(等同于) turning(關(guān)掉電視) the television set off, are you spared(免除) the unending (無休止的, 不停的)cry(叫喊聲, 哭) of “You Need(需要) it! Buy(買) It now(現(xiàn)在)!”
The end of the ride is somewhat(有點)like the beginning. You know it will soon be over(結(jié)束) and there’s a kind of expectation(期望) and excitement(欣奮) in that. The seat, of course, has become harder as the hours have passed. By now you’ve sat with your legs crossed, with your hands in your lap, with your hands on the arm rests ? even with your hands crossed your head. The end comes just at the right time. There are just no more ways to sit.
